Post Globe Joins 1st TechCamp Hackathon on Disaster Risk Reduction

As a follow-up to the successful 1st Philippine TechCamp on Disaster Risk Reduction and Resilience Building early this week, a TechCamp Hackathon was launched to create applications and solutions for problems brought about by extreme natural calamities affecting the country.

The hackathon is spearheaded by the U.S. Department of State, U.S. Embassy, US Agency for International Development (USAID), Globe Labs, Google Developers Group (GDG) Philippines, and Open Data PH.

Individuals or team of developers may pitch their ideas for a maximum of five minutes to a panel of judges composed of Jay De Jesus, Emerging Media Specialist for Public Affairs, US Embassy; Ely Apao, User Experience Manager, OLX.ph; Pia Bernal, Social Enterprise Investments Manager, Kickstart Ventures, Inc.; and Junito Berja, GIS Specialist, World Food Programme. The apps will be judged based on the following criteria: Relevance, 30%; Innovativeness, 25%, Visuals (UI/UX), 15%; Sustainability, 10%; Completeness, 10%; and Presentation, 10%.

The top three winners will receive PhP 30,000 each from the US Embassy to be turned over to any of the non-government organizations or local government units included in the list to be provided by WFP.

The best application will also receive PhP 3,000 worth of API (Application Programming Interface) credits from Globe Labs that will entitle them to 6,000 outgoing SMS and 40,000 incoming SMS, or 600 minutes of calls. This would be useful for voice or SMS based applications which require the sending and receiving of alerts and subscriptions, among other activities. The credits may be used within a six-month period to help them with the development and testing.

Meanwhile, hackathon judge Ely Apao, will also share “Design Thinking and Paper-based prototyping” to help the developers understand and build solutions to the hackathon problem sets. In addition, C. McNair Wilson, a motivational speaker on design and creativity, will give a talk to further inspire the hackathon participants. Wilson, a Disney Imagineer, draws on his professional experience in theater and graphic design, cartooning and illustration, creative writing, and entertainment design.
