Transcend ESD 250C 960GB Portable SSD Review

If you’ve noticed, we’re building a database for Transcend’s storage devices. Well, not really. But just in case you’re looking for more info on the company’s products, we’ve got another one coming for you. What we’re looking at today is the Transcend ESD 250C 980GB Portable SSD to fill you in with your need for speed, and space.

PACKAGING

The ESD 250C arrives in its usual flair – the black, white and red packaging we’ve grown familiar with. There’s also the usual clear cut part to give you a clear view of the ESD 250C.

Open it up and you’ll get the ESD 250C secured in an acrylic plastic case. A box underneath it holds two USB cables for Type-C and Type-A ends. You’ll also get some pamphlets and whatnot to get you started.

DESIGN

Built with aesthetics and speed in mind, the ESD 250C is quite the portable SSD. It features a lightweight aluminum construction, and its space-gray hue defines its design and structure. There’s only a single USB Type-C port at the end of the ESD 250C, and you can also connect the device to a Type-A or another Type-C device using the supplied cables.

PERFORMANCE

Transcend rates the ESD 250C with 520MB/s read and 460MB/s write peak performance. Seems like a reasonable claim for SSDs, and we’ll be putting that to the test.

ATTO Disk Benchmark

ATTO Disk Benchmark is an industry leading benchmark that help measure performance of system storage such as hard drives, solid state drives, RAID arrays, and so forth.

Crystal Disk Mark

We begin with one of the storage benchmark standards with Crystal Disk Mark to measure both of its read and write rates through a series of tests.

AS SSD Benchmark

AS SSD Benchmark tests the sequential or random read/write performance without using the cache through a test that reads/writes a 1GByte file as well as randomly chosen 4K blocks.

Real World Performance

For the real world performance, we’ll be using a set of 20GB file consisting of 119 video files, as well as an archived 16GB to test it out. The time is measured in seconds, and of course, lower is better.

CONCLUSION

There are plenty of options available for portable SSDs, much more portable storage devices that spell storage space and cheap prices at the cost of speed. In that regard however, the Transcend ESD 250C Portable SSD can deliver superb performance in a superb design that’s easily one of the best looking storage solutions you can get right now.
